Basic Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rules

• Funeral homes must give out prices over the phone.

• They must give a General Price List (GPL), Casket Price List and Outer Container Price List upon inquiry.

• The GPL must disclose that embalming is not usually required by law.

• They must give an itemized statement of final choices before contracting.

• They must disclose on the statement if the funeral home takes a fee for “cash advance” items (i. e. printing, flowers).

• They may not charge you a body storage fee during usual funeral transactions – only after 4 or 5 days.

• You have the right to choose an alternative cremation container – a casket is not required.

• You may purchase a casket anywhere you like, and the funeral provider may not charge an extra fee if you do.

• They may not claim that embalming or caskets will preserve the body.

• They may not lie about state laws.

• You do not have to purchase any goods or services you do not want, except for the Non-Declinable Fee
